Enablers of technical advise

The municipality of Hilversum has the ambitious goal of being completely natural gas-free by 2040. In Hilversum East, the search for sustainable, collective heat solutions is in full swing. Earlier, we explored how residual heat from the sewage treatment plant could be utilized with collective heat pumps and Heat and Cold Storage (WKO). An important alternative that had not yet been explored is solar thermal, specifically using Photo Voltaic Thermal (PVT) panels. Ecopulz was engaged to investigate the feasibility of these PVT panels. The study was to provide insight into both energy and financial aspects, and the results would serve as a basis for further decision-making.

The Challenge

The purpose of the study was to prepare a detailed cost estimate for the PVT installation, including its connection to the CHP system and heat grid. Olaf had to calculate the investment cost per component, determine the lifetime of the installation components, and determine maintenance and management as a percentage of the initial investment. In addition, the efficiency of the installation had to be calculated, identifying both heat capture and electricity generation. Finally, it was important to create a sketch design that met the technical and spatial requirements of the Municipality of Hilversum.

The Solution

Olaf conducted a thorough study of the costs, technical specifications and feasibility of the PVT installation. The cost estimate provided clarity on the required investments, the expected lifetime of the installation components and the associated maintenance costs. In addition, the efficiency of the installation was determined and the operating costs, such as electricity consumption and management, were worked out in detail. Based on these data, Olaf designed a sketch of the installation, closely following the guidelines and wishes of the Municipality of Hilversum. As a result, the municipality now has a solid basis to make informed decisions for the further development of their heat network.

Olaf:

"The complexity of making neighborhoods natural gas-free lies in the availability and local applicability of various sources. The approach of the municipality of Hilversum, which looks at all possibilities with a look through to the operation phase, is in our view the only right approach."
